ROSEMARY - HERB OF REMEMBRANCE

rosemary A perennial evergreen shrub, rosemary grows well in full sun in average, well-drained soil. It can be grown from seed but is more easily started from cuttings. Rosemary is winter-hardy to ten degrees F. In colder climates, plant it in a container and bring it indoors when frost arrives. The Latin name ros marinus translates as dew of the sea, referring to it's growth on the Mediterranean headlands.

The shrub variety, R. officinalis, can be pruned into a hedge or stand by itself as an accent plant. The low-growing, dwarf R. prostratus works well as a ground cover or in hanging planters.

Pinch new growth and harvest sprigs throughout the year. Use flowering branches in fresh arrangements and for garnishing. Dry the leaves for seasoning recipes and making teas.

Rosemary has a long record in legend. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia dubs it the herb of remembrance and fidelity. Traditional bridal bouquets are woven with rosemary sprigs to signify love and fidelity.
