First: Water and harden
off plants in advance. Space plants with
room to grow. Using a trowel, dig holes
as needed in soil that is cleared,
prepared, and watered. Dig holes larger
than the rootball. Transplant on a cloudy
day for least shock.
Then: Holding the plant between
your fingers, turn the container over.
Tap the bottom and the sides of the pot
gently until the roots are free. Carefully
ease the plant out; try to maintain soil
around the roots.
Third: Place the plant into the
hole up to its first true leaves - those
leaves that have the characteristics of
the mature herb. Fill the hole halfway
with soil, pressing it around the roots.
Water. Fill hole with soil.
Last: Water the soil gently but
well. Avoid splashing soil onto the leaves.
Make sure stalks remain upright. On a
plant marker, identify the herb, write
the date, and leave space to track fertilizing,
trimming and harvesting times.
