LANDSCAPE IDEAS

All-Edible Raised BedAll-Edible Raised Bed

Perfect in a sunny spot near the kitchen door, a small raised bed filled with borage and other culinary herbs provides easy access at a moment's notice. Initially grow three plants each of six favorite herbs with similar water and light needs. Avoid using herbicides, insecticides, and preservative-treated lumber near food crops.

Fill containers with colorful herbs to enjoy the lovely flowers indoors and out. Theme container gardens can be fun. Try planting all Asian-native herbs in one container to give you garden a touch of oriental charm; plant commonly used cooking herbs in one container and place it by the kitchen door for easy access.

Path Border - picturePath Border

Interplant two or three fragrant herbs along a path. They will give off their scent as people brush past. Combine low-and medium-height herbs with contrasting leaf colors and sizes that have similar growing needs. For a long blooming season, select spring- to fall-blooming herbs. Prune the flowers before they go to seed to control growth the following year.

Formal Garden Formal Garden - picture

The symmetrical patterns of formal gardens look best with neat-growing herbs of contrasting foliage colors and textures. Within the formal layout, planting can be informal, and often the most effective designs are quite simple. Consider circles within circles, a diamond within a rectangle or a rainbow of rows of different colored flowers.
