First: To unearth clumps of perennial
bulbs such as chives and other plants that
spread by runners, moisten the soil well
and dig carefully around the plant. This
is best done in spring or late summer.
Next: To divide the plant, pull
apart clusters of independently rooted divisions.
Some plants may need to be cut apart. Discard
any dead or dying section.
Last: Plant the divisions in newly
dug holes before the roots dry out and well
before the first frost. Divisions need time
to develop root systems before the ground
freezes. Water the divisions well until
established.
