Use redwood or cedar, never preservative-treated lumber, for beds
in which food will be grown.
Materials :
stakes and string for marking
shovel or spade
2 x 12 lumber, cut to desired length
copper sheeting
support stakes
lag screws
flexible netting
First:
A raised bed aids in weed and pest control and can be used
to separate garden areas. Determine the size of the bed, assemble
materials, mark off the area and dig a 2 inch wide perimeter trench.
Then:
Place boards in the trench. Drive support stakes into the ground
on both sides of the boards every 16 inches. Using lag screws, attach
all corners and the stakes to the boards. Add copper sheeting to the
top edges of the boards to deter snails and slugs.
Third:
Loosen the existing soil and work organic amendments into it.
Water thoroughly. Add a mix of soil and organic matter to fill the
bed. Water again.
Last:
Rake the bed, select desired herbs and sow seeds or plant transplants.
Cover the bed with flexible netting to protect seeds and plants from
birds and cats.
